Marble-effect quartz gives you the veining of Calacatta, Carrara or Statuario in a surface that does not etch, does not stain and never needs sealing. It is the most requested look in our showroom, and the reason is straightforward: people want marble right up until they find out how marble behaves in a kitchen that gets used.
Because quartz is engineered, the veining is designed rather than quarried. The slab you approve is the slab that gets fitted, and on the ranges we carry the pattern can be run across a full length, carried down a mitred edge or bookmatched across an island.
Why Choose Marble Effect Quartz Worktops?
Real marble is porous and reacts to acid. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine and tomato etch it, leaving dull marks in the polish that no amount of cleaning takes out. In a working kitchen that tends to happen within months rather than years.
Marble effect quartz sidesteps the lot. The surface is non-porous, so nothing soaks in and there is no sealing to keep on top of. It does not etch, it stands up to scratches and daily wear, and warm soapy water handles the cleaning.

CALACATTA, CARRARA OR STATUARIO?
The names come from the Italian quarries the original marbles were cut from, and they describe genuinely different looks. Worth knowing before you start browsing, because manufacturers use the same four names across completely different ranges.
Carrara. Fine, feathery grey veining spread evenly over a cool grey-white. The most restrained of the four and the easiest to live with in a small kitchen, where a bolder pattern closes the room in.
Calacatta. Thick, well-spaced veins in grey or gold across a brighter, warmer white. There is a lot of contrast in it, so it needs length to make sense: an island, or an uninterrupted run. On a short galley, it looks cramped
Statuario. Bright white with strong grey veining. Sits between the other two, more contrast than Carrara, less drama than Calacatta.
Marquina. The opposite end. Sharp white veins on a deep black background, worth a look if the rest of the kitchen is already light.

Veining That Survives the Edge
On a cheaper printed surface the pattern sits on top and stops at the edge. The ranges we fit carry veining through the body of the slab, so a mitred edge, a waterfall island or an upstand keeps the pattern running instead of showing a plain grey core. It is the detail that separates a convincing marble effect from an obvious one.
A Choice of Finishes
Polished is the standard and it is what gives marble effect its depth, because the veining catches light the way it does in real stone. Honed and matte soften it, reading closer to a limestone or a lightly aged marble. On the darker designs such as Marquina, a polish will show fingerprints a little more.
Predictable, Which Marble Is Not
A quarried slab is a one-off, and the piece you saw in the yard is not always the piece that arrives. Quartz is made to a recipe, so the worktop, island and upstands match each other, and what you approve in the showroom is what gets fitted. For a working kitchen, usually. Marble is the more beautiful stone up close, with a depth and faint translucency quartz does not quite reach. But it etches on contact with anything acidic, it stains, and it needs sealing on a schedule. Marble effect quartz gets you close to the same look with none of that, which is why most of the marble-look kitchens we fit are quartz rather than the real thing.
The good ones do not. What separates convincing from obvious is the veining: how varied it is, whether veins sit at different depths rather than all on one plane, and whether the pattern continues through the slab. Premium ranges hold up to close inspection. Do look at a full slab rather than a sample though, because a 100mm offcut tells you almost nothing about how a vein reads across three metres.
On the ranges we fit, yes. Full-body veining means the pattern continues through the thickness, so a mitred edge or a waterfall island shows vein rather than a plain core. This is the main thing separating premium marble effect quartz from budget alternatives, and it is worth asking about on any quote you get, ours included.
Neither. Quartz is non-porous, so wine, coffee, oil and turmeric sit on the surface and wipe away. And because there is no calcium carbonate in it, acid does nothing: lemon juice, vinegar and tomato leave it alone, where on real marble they would dull the polish within seconds. Heat is the one caveat, as the resin can scorch, so use a trivet.
