WHAT IS GRANITE?
Granite is a coarse-grained igneous rock formed from magma that cooled slowly deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Its name comes from the Latin granum, meaning grain, a nod to the visible mineral crystals that give the stone its speckled appearance. Its dark colouring comes from the minerals within it, amphibole and biotite in particular, sometimes broken by flecks of silver, gold or grey.
As one of the hardest natural materials on Earth, granite is highly resistant to heat, scratching and everyday wear. It is quarried from sites across the world, cut into large slabs and polished to a finish. Being a natural stone, it is slightly porous, so it is sealed to guard against staining and resealed every couple of years to keep it performing.
No two slabs of granite are ever the same. Each piece is formed over millions of years and carries its own pattern of colour, vein and crystal, which means every black granite worktop is unique to the slab it is cut from.
