Quartz worktops have become more and more popular, even surpassing traditional natural stone such as granite and marble (quartz worktops are about 90% ground quartz and 10% other materials). But, why exactly is that? Well, the answer is that there are many unique benefits to switching to quartz kitchen worktops, which are both visual and practical.
Stain Resistance
Avoiding stains in the room where we do all of our cooking and handle lots of food and drink can be extremely difficult. Once they’re there, it’s just as hard to get rid of them too. Thankfully, quartz is a non-porous material, which makes it very difficult to stain. It’s not impossible to stain quartz, but compared to porous materials like granite and marble, it is very stain resistant. This also makes it a lot harder for harmful bacteria to stick around, which in turn will prevent any from transferring onto anything edible. Some quartz worktops also contain antimicrobial agents, which reduces the chance of anything nasty getting on your food even further.
Keeping your quartz worktops clean is simple, requiring only soap and warm water to get out any spills and unlikely stains. You must avoid strong chemicals like paint stripper or caustic soda, as these can damage the sealant that protects the surface of the worktop.
Maintenance and Durability
Another practical benefit to quartz worktops is that they are much easier to maintain than traditional natural stone. Quartz does not require any sealing or polishing, it keeps its beautiful shine all by itself. It is also an extremely robust material, which takes a lot of power to break, so it’s very unlikely that the worktop would ever need replacing because of something being dropped on it. Scratch resistance is another benefit to using quartz, as although it is not impossible to scratch, it is very difficult. This is a vital quality for a worktop, as hard objects such as cutlery, plates, mugs and glasses are constantly being placed on and slid across the surface and nobody likes a scratched worktop!
Visual Variation
Traditional stone slabs contain naturally occurring veins and colours that cannot be changed, but quartz can come in a variety of different colours. This is because quartz worktops are made from a man-made mix of materials, which means there is a lot of room for experimentation with colours and patterns during the process of making them. This is great for anyone who wants their worktop to match a certain style or aesthetic as they can be made to match a range of materials and colours, where you may have been limited by natural granite previously.
Affordability
Let’s not beat around the bush, one of the most important things to consider when buying any worktop is the price. Thankfully, despite all of the practical and visual benefits that come with using them, quartz worktops are very affordable. This is due in part to how abundant quartz is. In fact, it is one of the most commonly found minerals in the world. The price of a quartz worktop can vary greatly depending on several factors such as size, quality, price of installation and where you are buying from. That being said, prices tend to range from £3000 to £4000 per slab, which is about the same as the price for granite slabs and much cheaper than marble.
Its visual appeal, strength and affordability have made it one of the most popular choices for worktops. So, if you are thinking of getting a new worktop for your kitchen, you should definitely consider quartz!
